Patagona Gigas
Le colibri géant (Patagona gigas - Colibri géant - Colibrí gigante - Giant Hummingbird).
Usually the size of the birds is measured from the tip of the beak to the end of its tail.
The largest hummingbirds would thus be those with a long tail like the Trochilus polytmus (30cm).
Curiously the Patagona gigas is considered to be the biggest hummingbird, but its size is very average (23 cm). What makes the difference is its weight reaching 23 grams. Somehow, this hummingbird is the heaviest of all hummingbirds!

During its evolution the Patagona gigas would have come up the mountainous areas from Patagonia, in South America, colonizing the Andes Mountains strip which goes up to Colombia. Usually their favorite areas are between 2000 and 3500 meters above sea level.

I could approach the Patagona gigas in Antisana, near Quito, Ecuador, 3500 meters above sea level. It rubbed shoulders with another Andes giant: the Condor.
